Support for Basal & Squamous Cell Skin Cancers
People who have been diagnosed with a basal or squamous cell skin cancer are at increased risk of developing more of these lesions. That’s why doctors at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center encourage follow-up appointments every six months to a year for skin examinations or skin biopsies if new growths are found.
NYU Langone also offers a variety of support services for people with basal and squamous cell carcinomas during and after treatment.
Rehabilitation After Surgery
If surgery for a basal or squamous cell cancer took place near a joint, doctors at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation can prescribe physical therapy to help you maintain flexibility in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other surrounding tissues and prevent contracture, the tightening of a joint.
Physical therapy can also help you recover from any weakness or discomfort resulting from surgery and reconstruction.
Supportive and Integrative Health Therapies
The supportive care team at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center provides ongoing treatment for any discomfort you may experience from the cancer or its treatments, including surgery and reconstruction. Your doctor may prescribe medication or integrative health therapies, such as acupuncture, which may relieve cancer-related pain and dry mouth and fatigue caused by radiation therapy. Massage therapy and yoga may reduce stress.
Psychological and Social Support
Support groups and one-on-one counseling sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist are available at the Perlmutter Cancer Center. Counseling can often help manage any stress or anxiety you may be experiencing. Social workers are available to help you address any financial concerns or logistical issues, such as transportation to your appointments.
Nutrition and Exercise
Our doctors encourage you to adopt a healthful diet and get regular exercise. Registered oncology dietitians at the Perlmutter Cancer Center can assess your diet and provide nutrition counseling.
After an evaluation, our doctors at Rusk Rehabilitation can prescribe an exercise program with the goal of optimizing your independence at home and in the community. The program focuses on strength training and aerobic exercise to address weakness and fatigue. It also aims to improve balance, flexibility, and mobility.
