Our expertise has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report, which ranks NYU Langone among the top 5 hospitals in the country for cardiology and heart surgery.

Heart Disease Treatment and Prevention

Our general cardiologists are the front line in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. They also provide strategies to help patients prevent and reverse the disease. Using advanced diagnostic testing, they get to the root causes of your symptoms and provide treatment options aimed at reversing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. When medications and lifestyle changes are not enough to treat your condition, they refer you to experts in nonsurgical and surgical treatment options. This includes surgical care from doctors at the Coronary Artery Bypass Program.

For people at increased risk of heart disease or who have already experienced heart attack or stroke, we provide specialized care through our Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease.

Heart Valve Repair

Our cardiac experts at the Heart Valve Center specialize in repair and replacement techniques to treat aortic valve disease and mitral valve disease. They have performed more than 5,000 mitral valve repair procedures, which is among the most of any center in the country.

We are also one of the highest-volume centers for transcatheter aortic valve replacement and transcatheter mitral valve repair, nonsurgical approaches that were pioneered by doctors at NYU Langone. Advanced imaging provided by doctors at our Noninvasive Cardiology Laboratory improves the safety and precision of these procedures. We have earned a three-star rating, the highest, from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for mitral valve replacement and repair and aortic valve repair.

Heart Rhythm Disorder Treatment

Our cardiac electrophysiologists are leaders in treatment of arrhythmias, which are disorders that cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or out of sync. Our doctors use the most-advanced catheter ablation techniques to disrupt the electrical signals causing irregular heart rhythm—if left untreated, they can lead to heart failure and stroke. Their techniques use standard radiofrequency ablation, which uses either cold or heat to disarm misfiring cells, as well as clinical trials of new treatments that use electrical pulses or radiation to stop arrhythmia.

We also provide access to the most advanced device technology, including pacemakers to speed up a too-slow heart, implantable cardioverter defibrillators to restore a healthy rhythm, and a left atrial appendage occlusion device to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke. We offer treatment through our Heart Rhythm Center locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island.

Interventions for Arterial Diseases

In our cardiac catheterization laboratories, our interventional cardiologists use percutaneous coronary intervention, a catheter-based procedure that allows doctors to find arterial blockages, remove them, and place a stent that strengthens the vessel and reduce the risk of future blockages. Our advanced training and experience allow us to treat severe blockages with advanced tools such as lasers and shock waves.

For blockages that cannot be treated using catheter-based techniques, we are leaders in coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This procedure uses a portion of healthy blood vessel, called a graft, to restore the blood supply to your heart. Our success has led to a three-star ranking for coronary artery bypass from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

We also employ innovative treatment methods for people with advanced heart failure, pairing bypass surgery with a ventricular assist device to make this procedure available to people whose hearts may not otherwise be strong enough for surgery.

At our Center for Complex Aortic Disease, our surgeons perform lifesaving and complex procedures to treat aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm.

Congenital Heart Conditions

Our heart specialists are also leaders in the treatment of adult congenital heart disease, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Our Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program is accredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association as an Adult Congenital Heart Disease Comprehensive Care Center, in recognition of our ability to provide all medical and surgical treatment options. Doctors at our Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program have treated more than 2,500 people, and our surgeons are innovators in the use of septal myectomy to treat the condition.

Heart Failure and Heart Transplant

For people with heart failure, the team at the Heart Failure Advanced Care Center provides the latest medical treatments and device therapies, including a left ventricular assist device, known as an LVAD, and total artificial heart. We are also leaders in providing lifesaving care to those whose condition has progressed to the point where a heart transplant is the best option. Our team has even helped many people who have been told elsewhere that they are not candidates for transplant.

Our heart transplant program is one of the top programs in the country, according to data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
