Lipid disorders develop when levels of fatty substances in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, fall outside the ideal range. People with higher-than-normal amounts of “bad” LDL cholesterol or triglycerides have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Having low levels of “good” HDL cholesterol has also been associated with higher rates of heart attack and stroke. In addition, people with very high levels of triglycerides are at risk of developing inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreatitis.
NYU Langone physicians are experts in identifying and managing lipid disorders. Our specialists also assess your risk of cardiovascular disease. Our physicians work with you to create a treatment plan that can help you manage your lipid levels and protect you from a heart attack or stroke.
Treatment often includes lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, healthy eating, and exercise. For some people medication may also be an option.
