Spine compression fractures may be caused by a fall or other traumatic accident, such as a car crash. This type of fracture is also common in people with osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and fragile. In people with osteoporosis, tiny fractures may accumulate in a vertebra over time as the result of everyday stress on the spine, potentially causing the weakened bone to collapse.
