Nadia Ovchinsky, MD

I have always enjoyed the most complex and challenging aspects of medicine. Pediatric hepatology, including liver transplant, is one of those areas. It truly takes a team to provide advanced care to children who have liver disease. When we work together and partner with families, we can achieve the best outcomes for every child. This is what drives me forward in both my clinical work and my research.

As an internationally recognized expert in liver disease, my goal is to offer families the best medical and surgical therapies for their children, including minimally invasive approaches. Working with the team at Pediatric Liver Disease and Transplant Program, we use advanced methods, including molecular analysis, to diagnose liver conditions and to fine-tune treatments. If liver transplant is needed, I prepare children and their families in advance and assure the best possible care during transplant and afterward. Helping children who are sick and fatigued become healthy, energetic kids is the most rewarding part of what I do.

As director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, I am committed to bringing together the most-talented specialists from numerous disciplines. We seek to provide comprehensive, family-centered medical and surgical care to all children with gastrointestinal and liver disorders. I hope to strengthen clinical and research partnerships across NYU Langone to propel innovation in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology.

I have published extensively on pediatric liver disease and remain an active clinical researcher. My research focuses on improving quality and enhancing the delivery care for children with chronic liver disease, optimizing outcomes of pediatric liver transplantation, and advancing therapies for children with cholestatic liver disorders, such as biliary atresia, Alagille syndrome, and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis. I am active in public policy and advocacy efforts to benefit children with liver disease and have served in leadership positions with professional societies in my field.

Among numerous awards, I am most proud of the ones recognizing my efforts for humanism in medicine and my commitment and dedication to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.
