About Me
When I was in kindergarten, I broke my right arm and needed physical therapy. I also required accommodations at school because I was right-handed. My healing took a village, and the experience stayed with me as I got older and started thinking about a career.
During my medical training, I saw children born with congenital disorders and special healthcare needs. But their rehabilitative care was often lacking. I have since dedicated my whole life to pediatric rehabilitation to improve children’s quality of life.
As a pediatric physiatrist, I help children who have neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy regain cognitive function, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech and language skills, and swallow function to the best of their abilities.
My colleagues and I evaluate premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. Early diagnosis of cerebral palsy means we can start intervention as soon as possible, when it is most effective. Our providers follow the guidelines of the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine on the early detection of cerebral palsy. We aim to diagnose infants as early as 3 months of age, corrected for prematurity. As part of our care, we also put parents in touch with social workers and mental health providers who can offer support.
Some of the treatments I provide include intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, and alcohol blocks to help with muscle tightness and spasticity. I can provide injections with sedation to children who do not tolerate needles. I also offer serial casting, a method of elongating the tendons to help improve movement, and prescribe custom bracing, to help with joint positioning. I modify these treatments as a child grows.
In addition, I work with school and community providers to help ensure appropriate accommodations for patients. Children who have a complex medical condition may need special equipment, wheelchairs, and transportation to and from school. I also see many of my patients as they grow into adults and provide them with continuity of care. I want them to be productive members of their communities.
I approach care with creativity and sensitivity, and I think of outside-the-box solutions to every problem. I collaborate with the treatment team, which includes primary care doctors and specialists such as neonatologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, and neurosurgeons to create treatment plans. My outpatient services are available at Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, NYU Langone Children’s Ambulatory Care Center—Mineola, and NYU Langone Ambulatory Care East Meadow.
My research interests include early detection of cerebral palsy and functional outcome measures of rehabilitative interventions in children with various disabilities. I also study the effects of Botox injections on the quality of life of patients who have spasticity.
I am honored to be a past president of the New York Medical Directors Association, where I worked on healthcare policy and advocacy for people who have cerebral palsy. In addition, I am one of the founding members of the Philippine Chinese American Medical Association. My fundraising efforts and medical work has been recognized by Nassau County with an outstanding citizen award. I have also been recognized by Super Doctors in the category of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) in the New York area.
