Research Summary
I am a professor in the Departments of Population Health and Medicine at NYU Langone. I am the founding director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science and the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science in the Department of Population Health, and a practicing hospitalist.
After receiving my AB degree magna cum laude in social studies from Harvard University, I earned my medical degree from Harvard Medical School and trained in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where I also served as chief resident. I then received a master’s degree in health services research while a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Yale School of Medicine, and spent seven years on the faculty at Yale School of Medicine. I came to NYU in 2014.
My work focuses on improving the safety and quality of healthcare delivery. Initially I focused primarily on improving the safety and quality of transitions in care of all kinds. I now work more generally on healthcare redesign and learning health system transformation through the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science and its Rapid Randomized Controlled Trial Laboratory. I am currently co-PI of the Clinical Science Core for the NIH’s RECOVER program to study post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, for which I help lead the ~18,000 participant adult cohort study. I also conduct federally-funded research on value in health care; have developed quality measures for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; and co-direct the NYU Population Health Science Scholars Program. I was named an Emerging Leader by the National Academy of Medicine and am an elected fellow of the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
My work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Commonwealth Fund, the John A. Hartford Foundation, the American Federation for Aging Research, the Patterson Family Trust, the Quad Family Foundation, and the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation.
