About Me
As physicians, we have accepted the responsibility of caring for patients in their time of need. With that in mind, what excites me about my chosen subspecialty of anesthesiology is the ability to help a patient safely undergo a surgical procedure—be it a simple elective case or a complicated, life-threatening issue. What’s most intriguing about anesthesiology is that it requires both intellect and medical knowledge as well as hands-on proficiency to perform procedures and provide the care patients need for safe, successful surgeries. Another critical aspect of our field, and one I deeply care about, is the focus on patient safety.
I completed my residency in anesthesiology and obtained additional training in cardiac anesthesia here at NYU Langone. I remained at NYU as a cardiac anesthesiologist before moving to the Hospital for Joint Diseases, or HJD (now known as Langone Orthopedic Hospital), as the associate director of Anesthesiology in 1986. While at HJD, I focused on caring for orthopedic patients, including those undergoing total joint replacement, surgery for fractured hips, spine surgery, and surgery on the extremities. In 2000, I became the chief of Anesthesiology at HJD. After the hospital’s 2007 merger with NYU, I took on the added position of executive vice-chair of the NYU Department of Anesthesiology. In December 2013, I was named the Professor and Dorothy Reaves Spatz MD Chair of the NYU Department of Anesthesiology.
Aside from my clinical efforts, I have also spent a significant portion of my career focused on education. One area of interest is the use of regional anesthesia for extremity surgery. In the early 1990s, along with fellow anesthesiologists, we introduced workshops to educate others on the most up-to-date regional anesthesia techniques. To this day, these workshops are still held at major anesthesia meetings both domestically and internationally. As ultrasound technology improved and became popular among physicians, I developed regional anesthesia models for teaching applications. In addition, I have worked on 3D models for teaching and virtual reality education. I have served our state and national organizations in multiple aspects including as president of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, overseeing both state and national annual meetings, and serving as vice president for Scientific Affairs for the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
At NYU Langone, we care for patients with the most complex medical conditions including heart, lung, liver, kidney, and face transplants. Each day our goal is to provide excellent care for those who place their trust in us. This focus is what drives me as chair to work diligently to ensure our department provides safe care for every patient utilizing the most up-to-date knowledge and technology available.
