Injection Sclerotherapy

Spider and varicose veins are injected with a medication that makes the lining of the blood vessel close. The body breaks down the veins naturally, and they disappear over a course of weeks to months.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) is a minimally invasive treatment for the removal of varicose veins. First a thin laser is inserted into the vein. As it is pulled back, laser light is emitted, causing the vein to close and seal shut. EVLT is performed under mild sedation.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is used for the treatment of larger superficial veins, and is often done under mild sedation. It requires expert knowledge that conventional sclerotherapy does not.

In this procedure, a solution is injected into your veins, causing their walls to collapse. Compression stockings are then used to ensure the vein walls stay collapsed. After the larger veins are treated, smaller spider and reticular veins often disappear. There is typically no scarring after the procedure. Potential side effects include brownish discoloration on the leg, and in rare cases allergic reactions.

Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation or Occlusion

Also known as VNUS closure, endovenous radiofrequency ablation or occlusion is a treatment for patients whose varicose veins are caused by venous reflux disease. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our office under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. The physician positions a small VNUS ClosureFAST™ catheter into the affected vein through a small opening in the skin. By heating the vein wall, radiofrequency energy from the catheter shrinks the vein, sealing it closed. After the vein is closed, blood is rerouted to other healthy veins.

Microphlebectomy

Requiring only local anesthesia, microphlebectomy is the preferred treatment for varicose veins. Microphlebectomy is often performed following procedures such as endovenous radiofrequency ablation. It removes any large surface veins left behind after the veins have been closed.

The veins are removed through punctures so small—typically one or two millimeters long—that patients don’t usually need stitches. After treatment, patients’ legs may improve in appearance, and feel better. Although slight scarring is a potential side effect, it usually disappears six months to one year after treatment.
