As you recover from a hand sprain or strain, nationally renowned experts at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation can help you to modify everyday tasks, so you can resume regular activities and avoid further injury. These rehabilitation experts often provide their expertise and therapy at NYU Langone Orthopedic Center.
Doctors may recommend taking an over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, as needed throughout recovery. If this does not relieve discomfort, your doctor may prescribe a stronger pain medication for a short period of time, typically up to two weeks, to help you recover comfortably.
NYU Langone occupational therapists can teach you ergonomic techniques to help prevent injury from overuse of certain tendons, muscles, and ligaments in the hands while at work. Sometimes, making a change as small as adjusting the angle of a computer keyboard or the height of a chair can prevent a sprain or strain.
