About Me
At NYU Grossman School of Medicine, I hold several academic positions and oversee educational cardiology programs at many levels.
I currently provide expert interpretation of echocardiograms at NYU Langone and Bellevue Hospital Center, a skill I teach every day as the program director for the Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. In this role, I have personally trained and mentored more than 200 fellows who have graduated from this three-year program.
I am also associate professor of medicine and associate director of educational affairs for the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology. As such, I oversee the operation of all training programs in the Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone.
Previously, as a member of the Training Program Directors Group of the American College of Cardiology, I served for eight years on a select writing committee that created, in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners, the first in-training examination in cardiovascular disease, which is now the national standard against which more than 280 cardiology fellowships judge their progressive training effectiveness.
My academic and research interests center upon the clinical applications of echocardiography and medical education. I have authored nearly 70 peer-reviewed publications, contributing many original observations concerning the diagnostic capabilities of all forms of cardiac ultrasound imaging. At the institutional level, I served for 16 years on the NYU Institutional Review Board, and on the Bellevue Hospital Center Research Committee, ensuring the safety and ethical application of human subjects’ research.
With more than four decades of experience in graduate medical education, I am also co-chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee and assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education. I chair the Accreditation Oversight Committee, the charge of which is to ensure the academic integrity of the nearly 175 residency and fellowship programs sponsored by the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
My educational journey began with an undergraduate degree in biology from Yale University. After graduating with honors from the New York University School of Medicine in 1975, I completed training in internal medicine, serving as chief resident, and a clinical fellowship in cardiovascular disease, all at NYU Langone and Bellevue Hospital Center. During my fellowship, I founded the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory at Bellevue Hospital Center and directed it for 35 years.
Throughout my more than 40 years of clinical practice in cardiovascular disease, I also provided academic, evidence-based consultation for patients with complex cardiac management and diagnostic problems. Although I’m no longer directly seeing patients, I took pride in explaining the complexities of medicine so patients could share in the decision-making required for state-of-the art care, which remains an important skill for the next generation of cardiologists.
