About Me

I have completed dozens of marathons—37 so far, at this writing—but my real love is basketball. I played in high school and have played recreationally ever since. I definitely understand people who want to keep doing their preferred sport or activity after an injury. I am less likely to say “Oh well, just don’t do that and you’ll quit hurting.” I take their issue to heart and try to find a solution.

As an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, I diagnose and treat all types of muscle, tendon, and joint conditions. I have special expertise in knee and shoulder issues. In most cases, I recommend medical treatment first. I’m a big believer in nonsurgical therapies, including injections using stem cells or platelet-rich plasma. The vast majority of the men and women I treat get well without surgery.

I typically offer minimally invasive procedures to patients needing surgery. I perform arthroscopic knee surgery and reconstruction, which uses a tiny camera to see inside the joint. I also use arthroscopic techniques to repair shoulder labral tears and torn rotator cuffs.

I work closely with our physical therapists to resolve orthopedic injuries without surgery. Physical rehabilitation is important, not only for restoring the full function of joints and muscles but also to prevent recurring injuries. For example, someone who has a bad ankle sprain can recover more quickly with rehabilitation and reduce the risk of future sprains that can lead to more-serious injury.

During my fellowship training in sports medicine, I served as a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles. I have cared for multiple high school sports teams and professional hockey and football teams.
