Prepare for Your Visit at the Eye Center
Our team at the NYU Langone Eye Center is committed to providing patients with the highest level of care. Knowing what to expect can take away some of the anxiety you may feel about treatment.
Here is what you need to know about your first visit to the Eye Center, from check-in to check-out.
Your First Appointment
When you arrive at the Eye Center, please check in with our staff at the front desk or at one of our self-service kiosks. Please bring your insurance card and photo identification. Prior to your visit, you can complete any necessary forms through your NYU Langone Health MyChart account.
If you are visiting the Eye Center for a contact lens fitting, please be advised that this service may not be covered by your medical insurance. A contact lens fitting involves your doctor determining the best type of contacts for your eyes to achieve optimum vision and comfort.
In the Exam Room
Once inside the exam room, you meet with one of our ophthalmic technicians who reviews your medical and eye history, and checks your vision and eye pressure. Your technician may perform a refraction test to measure your prescription for glasses and dilate your pupils using eyedrops to allow the doctor to look inside your eyes.
Every examination room is sanitized thoroughly between each patient with hospital-grade disinfectants, including all shared surfaces and imaging equipment. Our cleaning protocols follow the latest infection prevention guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Our Imaging Center
Our state-of-the-art Eye Center is fully equipped with the highest quality imaging systems, which are essential for the most accurate diagnosis and treatment. Imaging may or may not be needed during your visit. An ophthalmic photographer may perform one or more diagnostic tests:
- optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- Humphrey visual field test (HVF)
- intraocular lens calculations (IOL)
- corneal topography
- endothelial cell count
- fundus photography
- fluorescein angiography
- B-scan sonography
- ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM)
- slit lamp photography
Most of these imaging tests take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Some tests, such as HVF, IOL, fluorescein angiography, and UBM, may take 20 to 40 minutes to complete.
Meeting with Your Doctor
Your doctor examines your eyes, reviews any images that were taken, and addresses any questions or concerns you may have. As part of an academic medical center, students, residents, fellows, and other trainees, in addition to your physician, may be present during your visit to the Eye Center.
If you are scheduling for surgery, you meet with our surgical schedulers after you are seen by your physician.
Follow-Up Care
You can access your after-visit summary through your MyChart account and the NYU Langone Health app. Through the NYU Langone Health app, you can also request your latest glasses and contact lens prescriptions, request a prescription refill, schedule a follow-up appointment, and message your Eye Center care team.
