At NYU Langone’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries—Physical Therapy Clinic, physical therapists specializing in dance medicine treat professional and recreational dancers of all ages, as well as students and educators training and working in all forms of dance.
Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
We provide affordable medical and preventive care to dancers throughout the New York City area.
Learn More About Our CenterOur physical therapists incorporate a variety of methods for injury prevention and treatment, including Pilates; yoga; pelvic floor rehabilitation for dancers; the Gyrotonic® Method, a series of movements designed to stimulate the nervous system and increase range of motion; and the Graston® Technique, which uses steel instruments to help heal soft tissue injuries.
Most of our therapists have doctorates in physical therapy and certification in manual therapy, and some are board-certified orthopedic clinical specialists. As leaders in dance medicine, they serve on the faculties of university physical therapy programs and present at international conferences. They also take part in teaching the continuing medical education courses offered by Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.
To receive physical therapy, you need a prescription from a physician at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries or another doctor. Your first appointment is one hour and includes an evaluation. Follow-up visits are 30 minutes each and typically combine manual therapy and rehabilitative exercises under the guidance of your physical therapist.
