We provide developmental assessments and care plans for infants who have left the neonatal intensive care unit.
If your child was cared for at our neonatal intensive care unit, the team at the Neonatal Comprehensive Care Program may recommend a medical evaluation that includes growth measurements, a general physical exam, and a developmental assessment. Infants from other hospitals are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
We first meet your baby when he or she is 6 months old. Board-certified neonatologists from Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone provide a medical evaluation and developmental assessment. Our child psychologist and occupational therapist evaluate your baby’s motor, language, and cognitive development—looking at the way they move, communicate, and think—to determine whether they are on track to meet milestones. Every child is different, but understanding what most children can do at certain ages helps us know what types of support can best benefit your child.
We also collaborate with other specialists, including pediatric neurologists and pediatric rehabilitation doctors, depending on your child’s individual needs. Our goal is to provide your family with the information and resources to help your child reach developmental milestones and overcome any potential challenges.
We take a supportive approach to parent education and work closely with your family to create a care plan for your baby. If our assessment shows that your child has any developmental delays, we help find suitable services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or vision therapy. We suggest toys, games, and activities or exercises that can further your baby’s advancements. We also refer you to an early intervention program where experts can teach your child key skills to help him or her reach developmental milestones. Neurodevelopmental evaluations occur at least every 6 months until your child is 2 years old.
Our pediatric experts provide the best care possible for children with conditions ranging from minor illnesses to complex, more serious conditions.
