Physical Medicine Services

Rehabilitation physicians, known as physiatrists, play a pivotal role in musculoskeletal treatment at NYU Langone Orthopedic Center. These board-certified professionals pinpoint the source of your injury or limitation through a comprehensive evaluation process. As part of Sports Health at NYU Langone, our physiatrists excel at helping you recover from sports-related injuries and prevent future injuries from occurring.

Based on that assessment, they develop a treatment plan that may involve other physicians and therapists. They work with you and this team of specialists to implement the plan and monitor your progress.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation services are provided by the expert physicians of NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation, ranked among the nation’s top 10 by U.S. News and World Report and No. 1 in New York, every year since 1989.

Traditional and Alternative Rehabilitation Services

Physiatrists are experts in diagnosing and caring for back, neck, and joint pain and injuries; sports injuries; lumbar muscle weakness; chronic tendon pain; and recovery from joint replacement and other orthopedic surgery.

Treatments range from medications and injections to rehabilitation in the form of exercise, stretching, taping, and bracing, as well as integrative techniques such as acupuncture, meditation, and bodywork.

Physiatrists also provide electromyography studies, a diagnostic test that evaluates and records the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. This can be helpful in pinpointing the cause of muscle weakness or pain.
