Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe, painless, and effective form of traditional Chinese medicine. During a treatment, the practitioner uses hair-thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body, causing the release of proteins, hormones, and brain chemicals that control a number of body functions.

Acupuncture has been shown to affect blood pressure and body temperature, boost immune system activity, and release endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Acupuncture complements cancer treatments, helping to improve the body’s energy balance.

Massage Therapy

Research suggests that massage therapy can help with symptom management and stress reduction in people coping with cancer. Massage treatments can be focused on a specific problem area, such as the hands and feet, or can address the whole body to promote comfort and relaxation.

Most people undergoing cancer treatment can safely receive modified, light-touch massage. Our massage therapists have extensive training in oncology massage, and carefully review your health history to determine if any adjustment is necessary.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Performed by a massage therapist with advanced certification, manual lymphatic drainage—a style of light, rhythmic massage—is designed to help reduce and prevent the buildup of lymph fluid in the tissues of the body. The technique helps return the fluid, which carries oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells, back into the circulatory system.

Massage Therapist Rebecca Smith

Lymphatic drainage is often recommended for patients who have had lymph nodes removed surgically or who have had radiation treatment in areas that contain lymph nodes.

Yoga

Yoga is a mind–body practice that has been proven to help people living with cancer manage stress, build strength, and sleep more restfully. Our classes are designed with these principles in mind, but each class has a specific framework and unique approach.

Gentle Yoga with Marisa Sullivan

Relax!

This class teaches relaxation techniques to improve wellbeing. Yoga instructor Marisa Sullivan incorporates elements such as mindfulness meditation, simple stretches, and breathing exercises; each class also includes a guided relaxation segment. All exercises can be modified for any level of physical ability. Participants can choose to sit in a chair or use a mat on the floor. Classes are held every Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:30PM.

Therapeutic Yoga

The therapeutic yoga class is designed to help participants gain strength and flexibility, develop focus and concentration, and experience deep relaxation and overall wellbeing. Led by instructor Patricia Sanzone, this class is suitable for beginners as well as those who are familiar with yoga. You may perform yoga on the floor or while seated in a chair. Please bring your own yoga mat.

Classes are held on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30AM. To register, please call integrative health at 212-731-5806. Registration is required one week in advance before each class.

Payment for Integrative Health Services

Massage and acupuncture treatments must be paid for at the time of service, before the session. We accept cash, checks, major credit cards, and flexible spending account (FSA) cards.

For medical reasons, acupuncture and massage therapy are considered FSA-eligible expenses. We can assist you in obtaining a letter of medical necessity from your oncologist. Although most insurance plans do not cover these treatments, please check with your insurance company to see if your plan includes our services. If it does, we can provide you with all the necessary documentation to apply for reimbursement.
