Supportive Care at Perlmutter Cancer Center
We understand that cancer can affect every area of your life, from your family and work to your mental and physical wellbeing. That’s why our supportive care team at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center provides services to improve your quality of life during cancer treatment. Quality of life can be defined as overall wellbeing and the ability to function as normally as possible. Our goal is to help you best manage your symptoms during cancer treatment.
Support During Every Stage of Cancer Treatment
Our supportive care services are available for patients currently diagnosed with cancer, at any stage of illness or treatment. We approach your needs based on what’s important to you and work with you and your oncology team to develop a personalized support plan. Our program can help reduce the physical and emotional burdens of the disease, whether you have been recently diagnosed or have lived with cancer for some time.
Pain, severe nausea, fatigue, depression, loss of appetite, and weight loss are some of the common symptoms that our team can help manage, using a holistic approach. Supportive care may include determining the goals of your care; assessing and managing pain and other symptoms; and providing nutrition services, emotional counseling, integrative health, advance care planning, and mind–body services. Though we do not offer hospice care, we can help answer any questions you may have about support for a terminally ill patient.
Our supportive care team works with your clinical team to help you and your family during treatment. Your team may include a variety of experts, including oncologists, integrative health professionals, nurses, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, palliative care physicians, physical rehabilitation specialists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.
