Tobacco Cessation Program at Perlmutter Cancer Center
Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Doing so can help prevent cancer and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. But quitting can be difficult to accomplish on your own. That’s why NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center offers tobacco cessation support to patients and community members who wish to quit smoking.
We Can Help You Quit Smoking
Our program includes intensive counseling and treatment opportunities for current tobacco users or former users at risk of relapse.
Numerous studies have shown that a combination of counseling and tobacco cessation medication is the most effective approach to treating nicotine dependence.
We work with you to determine which medication regimen is best for you and whether it involves nicotine replacement therapy or oral prescription medicines.
We can also refer you to support groups and individual counseling and introduce you to integrative health techniques, such as hypnosis, through NYU Langone’s other Tobacco Cessation Programs.
The program at Perlmutter Cancer Center includes the following elements:
- a 45-minute initial counseling session with follow-up visits or telephone counseling as needed
- smoking cessation medication management, whether for prescription or over-the-counter medicines
- reports to referring healthcare providers that include a treatment plan and recommendations
- suggestions on nonmedical options
