Children with the chronic form of glomerulonephritis, which causes inflammation in the kidneys, are at risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure. Uncontrolled hypertension can worsen kidney function, preventing the organs from effectively removing waste from the blood. This can cause irreversible kidney damage.
Our registered dietitians at NYU Langone can help you develop a meal plan that limits certain items in your child’s diet. This includes salt, which may lead to water retention, swelling, and hypertension. Potassium can cause heart rhythm disturbances, known as arrhythmia, and should also be limited. In addition, because waste products from the breakdown of protein can build up in the kidneys and blood, children should limit their protein intake.
Your child’s doctor may also recommend calcium supplements and vitamin D to offset the side effects of corticosteroids, which may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. These medications can weaken bones and cause growth problems.
We can help you find a Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital doctor.
