Support for Learning Disorders in Children

The experts at the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, offer ongoing support to ensure that your child receives the services he or she needs, both in and outside the classroom. These child and family support services and resilience programs are provided by Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

After your child’s individualized education program (IEP) has been in place for several months and your child is engaged in therapy, our experts encourage families to check in with us so our experts can monitor your child’s progress on a regular basis. Our specialists recommend periodically evaluating the effectiveness of the services your child receives and can assist with additional meetings or updates to your child’s IEP.

Our experts recommend having an updated neuropsychological evaluation as your child gets older, to best support his or her needs throughout high school and college. These evaluations can be especially helpful if your child is preparing to take college or graduate program entrance exams.

Partnership and Advocacy

Our experts partner with families, educators, and therapists to ensure that your child receives the services he or she needs. Our doctors can advocate on your and your child’s behalf at educational meetings and in the classroom and can work with other physicians if your child is being treated for a condition such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or anxiety.

Student Support

Our neuropsychologists can work with students one-on-one to review the results of their evaluation, help them understand their learning challenges, and encourage them to speak up for themselves in the classroom.

Many children with learning disorders feel self-conscious about being called out of the classroom to receive special assistance. Some may be targeted or bullied by students or feel anxious about not keeping up in the classroom. Our doctors can make referrals to psychiatrists and psychologists at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital to enhance self-esteem, discuss safe and confidential ways to report and handle bullying, and reduce anxiety and frustration in children with learning disorders.

We also offer an art-based workshop to help children understand learning disorders and how the brain works.

Organizational Skills Training

The Child Study Center has a program that teaches children with ADHD and other behavioral disorders how to improve their organizational, time management, and planning skills. Our instructors can help your child, adolescent, and young adult identify obstacles to organization and offer tools, such as planners and other tracking devices, to help your child stay on top of school assignments. The program also offers guidance to parents and teachers on how to modify a child’s organizational behavior.

Parent and Teacher Education

Experts at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital also offer a variety of educational workshops, held at the Child Study Center or at your child’s school, for parents and teachers who want to learn more about learning disorders and how to treat them. Past workshops have focused on understanding how children learn, teaching children with learning disorders, and improving a child’s organizational skills.
