Unfortunately, sleep problems are common throughout life, and significant sleep difficulties at an early age can lead to sleep problems later in life. Left untreated, sleep disorders can predispose you or your child to mental health conditions, such as depression.

At the Child and Adolescent Sleep Service, part of the Child Study Center, we evaluate and treat toddlers, children, adolescents, and young adults experiencing sleep-related problems.

Our sleep experts like Dr. Rebecca Berry perform comprehensive evaluations with patients to help assess and treat sleep concerns.

Conditions we evaluate vary by age and include the following:

  • bedtime resistance and nighttime awakenings in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
  • insomnia and difficulty waking up at expected times in adolescents and young adults
  • narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, and fatigue in children, adolescents, and young adults
  • nighttime fears, including fear of the dark and nightmares in preschoolers and school-aged children
  • restless leg syndrome in children, adolescents, and young adults
  • sleep terrors, sleepwalking, and bedwetting in children and adolescents
  • snoring and sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea, which can occur at any age

Evaluation and Consultation

After a focused evaluation of sleep concerns, sleep schedule, daytime behavior, and medical history, our sleep experts, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, provide your child with an individually tailored treatment plan.

Treatment

Components of treatment vary based on the problem and may include the following:

  • education about the sleep disorder
  • referral for a sleep study in cases of suspected apnea, hypersomnia, or narcolepsy
  • sleep schedule and sleep hygiene recommendations
  • cognitive behavioral therapy
  • melatonin or other medications
  • light therapy
