Welcome to the

Child Study Center

We help transform the lives of children and families through science, education, and practice.

Caring for children who have mental health and development disorders requires a team approach that meets children where they are—emotionally, behaviorally, and physically.

At the Child Study Center, our diverse team of psychiatrists, psychologists, neuropsychologists, social workers, developmental pediatricians, nurse practitioners and other mental health professionals are leaders in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Our knowledge and skill ensure that your child receives evidence-based care aimed at improving your child and family’s quality of life.

As part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, we care for children and their families on an outpatient basis through our specialized programs. Sometimes a mental health issue appears or is heightened during a hospital stay, or during treatment with a primary care physician. Through our Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation–Liaison Service and Integrated Behavioral Health Program, we provide clinical services, consultations, education, and program expertise across the continuum of care at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and other NYU Langone sites. These include the Child Study Center, Fink Children’s Ambulatory Care Center, Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone.

Conditions We Treat

We treat mental health conditions that affect children, from infancy through to adulthood. They include the following:

Our physicians also have expertise in using state-of-the-art, evidence-based medication to treat many childhood psychiatric disorders. When used properly, pharmacological treatment can provide major relief from conditions such as anxiety and ADHD.

Research and Education

The Child Study Center is part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which is one of only two independent child and adolescent psychiatry departments within an academic medical center in the nation. The department provides clinical care for children and adolescents at the Child Study Center, as well as at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, and other locations.

Our scientific research programs span basic, clinical, systems, and population science to study the causes, course, identification, and treatment of mental health and developmental challenges from birth through young adulthood.

We are also committed to developing and using innovative technologies to care for and engage with families across the globe. Our goal is to advance the science of child development and mental health through telepsychiatry, digital health apps, and cutting-edge data analytical tools.

Our education program trains and inspires the next generation of child and adolescent psychiatry residents and fellows, scientists, child psychologists, undergraduates, medical and nursing students, postdoctoral fellows, interns, and social work candidates. We also host frequent community-based trainings and webinars for parents and healthcare and educational professionals.
