When your child is receiving medical care, you may spend hours with your child in hospital rooms and at tests or procedures. Often, you and your family see the day-to-day workings of the hospital up close.
This intimate, firsthand experience is invaluable to us. We created the Sala Family Advisory Council at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone to engage parents so they can help us improve the hospital experience. At our meetings, parents tell us what works and what doesn’t, what we do well, and what could use some improvement. The goal is to make the experience better for others. Family Advisory Council services are made possible through the expertise and resources of our Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

Our family advisors have made their mark throughout Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital. They have helped us improve patient safety and have suggested new ways to strengthen communication between parents and staff, especially during the most stressful times. We used their perspective, along with that of the Sala Youth Advisory Council, to plan and develop our new patient and family experiences, including those at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street.
Family to Family Hours
Family Partnership Programs
Through our Sala Family Advisory Council, Sala Youth Advisory Council, and Sala Patient and Family Faculty Program, we give voice to the children and families we serve.
Sala Family to Family Hours, hosted by our Sala family advisors, give parents of hospitalized patients an opportunity to talk about the challenges of having a child in the hospital. Family advisors offer support and conversation. We hold special events during Sala Family to Family Hours, including discussions on topics such as improving the medical experience for your child.
