Medical Services for Women with Disabilities

When you arrive at NYU Langone’s Initiative for Women with Disabilities at the Elly and Steve Hammerman Health and Wellness Center, you are given access to primary care services and gynecological care customized for women with physical disabilities.

Primary Care

You meet one-on-one with our primary care physician or nurse practitioner, who can help you to stay healthy.

Services include routine checkups and screenings for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Our specialists treat people with diabetes, asthma, and other respiratory diseases, as well as those who have the flu, a sore throat, and other common illnesses. They can also provide education about ways to stay healthy.

Referrals to specialists and other services are provided as necessary.

Gynecologic Care

Services we provide include annual gynecology exams with Pap tests, breast exams, contraception counseling, sexually transmitted disease screening, and evaluation and management of gynecologic infections and abnormal bleeding. Referrals are made for mammograms and ultrasound scans.

We have power adjustable exam tables with padded stirrups and a Hoyer® lift for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. This ensures that you receive a thorough gynecological exam in a way that is comfortable and respectful of your needs.
