Babies born at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn who need extra medical attention are cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The NICU at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, is accredited by The Joint Commission for our palliative care and advanced perinatal care services. This reflects our excellence in providing mothers and babies with safe, quality healthcare, and our commitment to providing the best quality of life to infants with serious illnesses.
A state-designated Level II Perinatal Center, our board-certified neonatologists care for infants born at 32 weeks gestation or older, who weigh at least 1,500 grams (roughly 3.3 pounds), and are considered moderate risk due to medical issues such as apnea of prematurity, inability to maintain body temperature, or inability to take oral feedings.
For babies who have trouble breathing on their own, we provide noninvasive therapies such as oxygen supplementation using a nasal cannula and nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), as well as invasive therapies such as intubation for short periods of time when necessary.
Our team includes experts in maternal–fetal medicine, pediatric cardiology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric neurology, and pediatric otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat). If needed, babies can receive speech–language pathology services to help with swallowing and physical therapy through Rusk Rehabilitation.
Babies born earlier than 32 weeks, smaller than 1,500 grams, or with more complex medical issues are transported to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tisch Hospital, a state-designated Regional Perinatal Center that provides Level IV care, as defined by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Our pediatric experts provide the best care possible for children with conditions ranging from minor illnesses to complex, more serious conditions.
