Nursing at Tisch Hospital & Kimmel Pavilion
Nurses at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion are among the nation’s leaders in shaping the future of nursing. Our culture supports and encourages the voice of nursing in all aspects of patient care delivery, and nurses participate in all organization-wide initiatives to ensure that patients and their families are at the center of all we do.
Across NYU Langone, our nurses drive exceptional patient care outcomes through their combination of clinical expertise, dedication, and compassion. Through our various educational programs, specialty certifications, awards, and advocacy efforts, our nurses prove their dedication to the health and wellbeing of our patients.
Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion Nursing Highlights
Our nurses are dedicated to implementing quality initiatives to help keep patients safe, while delivering the highest level of care. Recent quality initiatives include making sure that rounds are patient centered, addressing diversity and equity in healthcare, and advancing evidence-based nursing practices.
Patient-Centered Rounds
In spring 2021, our nurse managers and unit-based medical directors initiated daily rounds on all inpatient areas. Through this program, bedside rounds are conducted to connect with patients about their care and experience, and allow care teams to make timely and responsive adjustments.
Addressing Diversity and Equity
Nurses are important advocates for patients at the point of care and beyond. At NYU Langone, our nurses are leading several initiatives that bring attention to at-risk patient populations and seek to reduce healthcare disparities in the communities we serve. Focus areas include LGBTQ+ patients, as well as partnering with Black, indigenous, and other people of color to improve health outcomes before, during, and after pregnancy.
Advancing Evidence-Based Nursing Practice
A practice based on the latest published evidence rather than relying on historical standards is essential to ensuring that nurses deliver healthcare services effectively in a fast-paced world. Nurses at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion contribute to the greater body of knowledge through research, quality improvement projects, and incorporating published best practices into their daily work. One such example is at the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, where nurses apply the latest evidence to optimize outcomes and reduce the length of stay for patients having cardiac catheterization.
Specialty Certifications
We support and encourage eligible professional registered nurses at all levels of nursing to earn specialty certification. Specialty certification demonstrates to peers, colleagues, patients, and families a commitment to excellence in care and improving outcomes. Studies show that certified nurses feel more confident in their work, are satisfied in their jobs, and serve as powerful role models for others.
In 2020, 51 percent of all registered nurses at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion had specialty certification.
Nursing Education
The guiding philosophy of our nursing leadership at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion is that excellent patient care outcomes depend on a highly educated nursing staff. Higher education aligns with our strategic plan to develop innovative patient care delivery models and to provide highly reliable patient care through transformational leadership, professional growth, and clinical excellence.
There is substantial evidence in nursing literature that patients have improved outcomes when care is provided by baccalaureate-prepared professional registered nurses, because they are able to meet the demands of the evolving healthcare climate. Our nurses comprise one of the most highly educated professional staffs in the country. In 2020, 98 percent of nurses at Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion had a bachelor’s degree or above, and 8 percent held a master’s degree or above.

We look forward to continuing this new tradition of acknowledgment and gratitude for compassionate nursing care in the months and years to come. Nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award.
Safety Star Awards honor staff members who make outstanding contributions to our culture of safety. These staff members are nominated by peers and managers for exceptional safety efforts on behalf of patients. This might include taking a “stop and resolve” action that keeps a potential breach of patient safety from happening, or using communication protocols that create an environment of teamwork and psychological safety, allowing everyone to do their best work on behalf of our patients.
Advocacy Efforts
Nurses at all levels at NYU Langone participate as active members in their professional organizations. These organizations often serve as forums for nurses to have important conversations about practice and policy with their peers, regionally and nationally. Through these organizations, nurses are also able to advocate for patients, families, their communities, and the nursing profession. As members of the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, our nurses have taken part in the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders Lobby Day and the American Organization for Nurse Executive Leaders Advocacy Day.
