Support for Children with Renal Tubular Disorders

Pediatric kidney specialists at NYU Langone partner with families to ensure that children with renal tubular disorders receive the most comprehensive care possible. Our specialists offer wellness services to support you and your child throughout treatment. These child and family support services and resilience programs are provided by Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care.

Growth Support

Left untreated, renal tubular disorders can cause growth problems in children. If your child is having a growth problem, your family may be referred to an NYU Langone pediatric endocrinologist, who specializes in caring for children with hormone disorders. He or she can identify treatments that can help your child resume a normal growth pattern.

Developmental and Learning Support

Babies and children who have growth problems caused by a renal tubular disorder are at risk for developmental delays, including motor, cognitive, and speech delays. Our kidney experts can refer you to a neuropsychologist, a specialist who diagnoses and treats children with these disorders. He or she can determine if occupational and physical therapy at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation might help your child meet developmental milestones.

Growth and nutritional problems can also result in learning disorders, including challenges in reading, math, and communication. Our doctors can refer you to learning experts at NYU Langone’s Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, or a provider in your community for educational support.

Family Counseling

Specialists at NYU Langone can respond to your concerns about having a child with a chronic kidney condition. Our pediatric kidney experts offer care within a family-centered, supportive environment and can refer you to counselors and social workers for psychological support.
