Center for Children

We bring together all of the medical and rehabilitation services your child needs to recover from an injury or manage an orthopedic, musculoskeletal, or neuromuscular condition.

At the Center for Children, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, our doctors include experts in orthopedic surgery, genetics, neurology, rheumatology, and physiatry, also known as rehabilitation medicine. They are joined by a team that includes our child life specialists, genetic counselor, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and social workers. We get to know your child and family, and work together to develop a treatment plan that is specific to your child’s medical, physical, and emotional needs.

Conditions We Treat

We treat all conditions that affect the bones, muscles, and joints. We also care for injuries such as broken bones, torn ligaments, and sprained or strained joints.

Conditions we treat include the following:

• bone, joint, and muscle disorders, including scoliosis, hip dysplasia, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and limb deformity and limb-length inequalities
• skeletal dysplasias—including achondroplasia, pseudoachondroplasia, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, and Larsen syndrome—arthrogryposis, Blount disease, and clubfoot, which is treated by experts at the New York Ponseti Clubfoot Center, a component of the Ebers Center for Foot Deformity at the Center for Children
• rheumatologic conditions, such as juvenile arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO)
• brain and nervous system disorders, including brachial plexus injury, cerebral palsy, concussion, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, scoliosis, spina bifida, and hereditary sensory autonomic neuropathies, such as congenital insensitivity to pain, treated at NYU Langone’s Dysautonomia Center
• systemic syndromes that affect the musculoskeletal system, including Down syndrome, and a number mucopolysaccharidosis conditions, including Hunter, Hurler, and Morquio syndromes

Our Outpatient Care Center

The Center for Children is located inside NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. Doctor’s visits, rehabilitation therapy, specialized treatments, and X-ray and ultrasound testing are all performed at this one location.

Child life specialists provide comfort and support during medical procedures, such as casting and imaging tests. We have toys, arts and crafts, and special activities and events, including theater performances hosted by Only Make Believe, a nonprofit organization, and Hero of the Month, sponsored by the Kids Wish Network.
