Women's Health Rehabilitation
Women’s Health Rehabilitation at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation was developed to address conditions and issues that uniquely affect women. These include pelvic pain and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, urinary incontinence (frequency or urgency), bowel incontinence or constipation, sexual dysfunction and discomfort, cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema, muscle weakness, prenatal and postpartum musculoskeletal conditions, lower-back pain (including related groin and hip issues), and osteoporosis and bone health.
Experts in Women’s Health Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation therapies for women are provided at Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health, Rusk Rehabilitation Brooklyn at Shore Road, and Rusk Rehabilitation Brooklyn at Sunset Park Family Health Center.
Our team of rehabilitation experts offers the following treatments and therapies.
Physical Therapy
Certain health topics are uniquely or predominately associated with women, including pregnancy, osteoporosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, and some sex-specific cancers. Rusk Rehabilitation physical therapists lead a number of outpatient programs for women that are designed exclusively to address these concerns.
Each program begins with a comprehensive and thorough evaluation, after which an individualized treatment program is developed by a physical therapist specially trained in these rehabilitation services.
Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise Program
Women experience many musculoskeletal, physiological, and emotional changes during and after pregnancy. These changes can occasionally lead to neck pain, lower-back pain, pelvic pain, joint discomfort, or incontinence, creating a need for therapeutic exercise. Rusk Rehabilitation women’s health specialists have developed a program of gentle, safe, manual therapy and exercises designed to address and relieve these pregnancy-related changes.
Osteoporosis Exercise Program
Osteoporosis is a disorder in which bones become increasingly porous and brittle, making them more prone to fracture. It occurs most often in women.
To limit your risk of injury, our physical therapists train you in weight-bearing exercises, resistance and flexibility training, and fall prevention.
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy
One of the most common conditions related to pelvic floor weakness is urinary incontinence. Pelvic pain can also result from pelvic floor weakness. This can be the result of surgery, injury, labor and delivery, or sexual abuse.
Rusk Rehabilitation physical therapists who are specially trained in women’s health rehabilitation develop personalized treatment programs for our patients that may include pelvic floor muscle exercises, manual therapy to address any misalignment and lack of muscle tone in the pelvic floor and the muscles surrounding it, and patient education on pelvic floor function and self-management strategies.
